About the unit

The Critical Care Department at Waikato Hospital is the tertiary provider for Intensive Care to the Midland region of New Zealand. The Waikato ICU is a state of the art, 16-bed facility providing all major tertiary services including a major trauma centre and is the second largest cardiac surgical centre in New Zealand.

We also provide neurosurgical and regional burns care in addition to a busy general intensive care, catering to the needs of 1500 ICU patients and almost 3000 HDU level patients each year. Critical Care provides services to the local Waikato district as well as the wider Te Manawa Taki region, including the Bay of Plenty, Tarawhiti and Taranaki. The Intensive Care unit provides a medical transport service, using helicopter, fixed wing and land transport.

The unit is credentialed by the College of Critical Care Medicine at level C24.

Recruitment

Our unit is currently in a growth phase with a planned expansion of the unit. This involves the integration of ICU and HDU as well as an expansion of total bed numbers. We are actively recruiting appropriately trained Specialist Intensivists and Fellows who are keen for a varied case mix and to join us in this opportunity.

We are actively recruiting for qualified specialist intensivists and have several positions currently available.

Intensivists are employed under an ASMS contract with generous allowances above base salary.

Specialist Intensivists

We have an active fellowship program and our Fellow roles are accredited for Transition Year Training with the College of Intensive Care Medicine (CICM).

To allow for appropriate remuneration and benefits, our fellows are employed under the ASMS contract. They are supported to partake in the consultant roster, with Intensivist backup at all times.

Fellowships

Applications are invited for Registrars looking to join the Critical Care team at Waikato Hospital.

The Waikato Hospital Critical Care Unit is a vibrant and exciting place to work. The critical care department is made up of 16 intensive care beds and 12 HDU beds in a modern purpose built facility. New technology surrounds this department. Registrars work across the critical care looking after arguably the broadest range of patients in New Zealand. The patient population includes a large volume trauma centre, a neurosurgical ICU, cardiac surgery ICU, general adult ICU and limited paediatric ICU. Registrars are involved in transport across the Te Manawa Taki regional hospitals by helicopter, plane and road.

Waikato Critical Care offers excellent experience with a hugely varied casemix. It also has a agreement with the Waikato Department of Anaesthesia for Trainees to gain the necessary Anaesthesia experience for CICM training.
