Waikato Critical Care

Critical Care is where high level, specialist care is given to people with serious, potentially reversible conditions or injuries. It provides a healing and supportive environment for patients and whānau.

The Waikato Critical Care Department is the tertiary Critical Care Unit for Te Manawa Taki (Midland) region, and operates round-the-clock transfers from other hospitals.

The Waikato Department is currently divided into 2 areas:

  • Intensive Care Unit (ICU), where critically ill patients are cared for, and

  • High Dependency Unit (HDU), where patients can receive a level of care and monitoring between that of ICU and ward level care
